Your self concept is the idea you have about yourself. It’s the story you tell yourself in your head, all day long.

It’s answers to questions like:

  • Am I lucky?
  • Do good things happen to me?
  • Am I someone who is always broke?
  • Am I a healthy person?
  • Do people like me?

Your subconscious mind believes this story 100%. It doesn’t know if it’s true or false. It just accepts it. And then, it works day and night to make your outside world match your inside story.

Think of your self concept like the operating system on a computer. Your thoughts and actions are just apps running on that system. If the operating system is old and buggy (a bad self concept), no matter what app you try to run (“get more money,” “find a partner”), it will crash.

You have to update the operating system first.

The Science Behind the Magic: Why Your Brain Agrees

This isn’t just spiritual fluff. Science can explain it too! It’s called the Reticular Activating System (RAS).

Your RAS is a tiny filter in your brain. Its job is to show you what you tell it is important.

Here’s a fun example: Have you ever thought about buying a red car, and then suddenly you see red cars everywhere? Those cars were always there. But your RAS didn’t think they were important until you told it to by focusing on “red car.”

Your self concept tells your RAS what is important. If your self concept is “I am unlucky,” your RAS will show you all the proof that you are unlucky (spilled coffee, missed bus). It will filter out all the good stuff!

But if your self concept is “I am so lucky,” your RAS will work overtime to show you all the lucky things (a green light, a forgotten $10 in your pocket). The world didn’t change. Your filter did.

The Everyday Problem: How a Bad Song Ruins Your Day

Let’s use a simple example anyone can relate to: stress headaches.

Your boss gives you a big project. You think, “Oh no, I’m so stressed. I always get headaches when I’m stressed.”

What is your self concept here? It is: “I am a person who gets stress headaches.”

Your subconscious mind hears this anthem loud and clear. It says, “Okay, boss! Let’s make a headache happen to match this idea of ourselves!”

And sure enough, a few hours later, the headache arrives. You think it was inevitable. But it wasn’t. It was a manifestation of your self concept.

Now, imagine a different anthem. Imagine hearing that big project and thinking, “I got this. I handle pressure easily. I am calm and focused.”

This new self concept—your new manifestation anthem—tells your body and mind a different story. It tells your RAS to look for feelings of calm and focus. The headache might never come.

Here is the simple way I did it. I call it the “I Am” exercise.

  1. Get Quiet: Sit for two minutes in silence. Just breathe.
  2. Ask: “How do I want to feel? Who do I want to be?” Do you want to feel abundant? Loved? Strong? Healthy?
  3. Choose Your Anthem: Pick one simple “I Am” statement. Just one to start. Make it positive and in the present tense.
    • Not “I will be rich.” but “I am abundant.”
    • Not “I want to be loved.” but “I am loved.”
    • Not “I won’t be sick.” but “I am healthy and strong.”
  4. Feel It: Say your “I Am” statement to yourself. Don’t just say the words. Try to feel the feeling of being that person. What does it feel like to be abundant? It might feel relaxed, or generous. Feel that feeling for just 10 seconds.

That’s it. Do this a few times a day. In the shower. In the car. While washing dishes.

You are gently telling your subconscious a new story. You are changing the station. You are installing a new operating system.
